For those who require English translations, please select a payment method other than paying at a convenience store in order to ensure that we are able to refund your payment in the case that translations are ultimately not provided (this will be determined on 2/14). −Venue: Zoom −Ticket prices Adults (non-students)　1000 yen Students　　Free ※The Zoom link for the event will be sent to your provided email address one day prior to the event. “Sentakuteki Fuufu Bessei (System for optional separate surnames for married couples)” has recently been a hot topic of discussion in Japan and has repeatedly seen media coverage. Japan is the only developed country in which married couples cannot choose to have separate surnames; once married, it is required for a couple to choose either the wife’s or husband’s surname to go by. In 96% of the cases, the wife changes her surname to her husband’s. For many, changing one’s name or the expectation to do so is a stressful ordeal. Despite many feeling that their names are inextricably linked to their identity, this system of sentakuteki fuufu bessei has yet to be implemented in Japan. In light of this situation, how exactly should we approach this issue? We have invited Ms. Naho Ida, Executive Director of 選択的夫婦別姓・全国陳情アクション (Sentakuteki Fuufu Bessei National Chinjyo Action), to talk about this topic in detail. This event will focus on providing a mini crash course geared towards beginners on the topic of sentakuteki fuufu bessei so feel free to participate in this event even if you aren’t quite familiar with the term or system! We’ll also have a discussion segment at the end, so it will be the perfect opportunity to exchange thoughts and opinions on the topic with Ms. Ida, VUJ Waseda members, and other participants. −Event Schedule ・Introduction of Ms. Naho Ida ・Ms. Ida’s explanation of the issues surrounding sentakuteki fuufu bessei ・Q&A Session (please note that we will not be able to address all of the questions due to time constraints) ・Discussion in breakout rooms −Suggested audience ・People that are not familiar with the issue of sentakuteki fuufu bessei (ex. those who have heard of the term but are not very aware of the issue) ・People who wish to learn more about gender-related issues −Speaker Introduction Ms. Naho Ida: In 2018, Ms. Ida founded 選択的夫婦別姓・全国陳情アクション (Sentakuteki Fuufu Bessei National Chinjyo Action) while working at an IT company. Since then, she has advocated extensively for the implementation of the sentakuteki fuufi bessei system; for example, through her organization, she has submitted petitions calling for the implementation of this system to prefectural assemblies across Japan. 選択的夫婦別姓・全国陳情アクション, the organization that she is currently the Executive Director of, is dedicated to working for the legalization of the fuufu bessei system. In particular, Ms. Ida’s organization places emphasis on submitting and passing written statements, some of which, in the past, have been selected to be voted upon within the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly. ※Please register through Peatix in order to participate in this event.
