Dear All,

I am delighted to share the news that the 2023 Berggruen Prize Jury has chosen trailblazing sociologist Patricia Hill Collins as the winner of the annual $1 million Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture.

According to the Prize Jury, Dr. Collins was selected for how her work “provides a powerful analytical lens through which we can envision the different and intersecting ways in which our material, social, and cultural worlds produce injustice,” and has given us “original vocabulary with which to think about social power and contestation.”
The first Black laureate of the Berggruen Prize, she is a pioneering scholar and advocate whose exploration of the interchange between theory and practice has transformed notions of power and justice in ways that have resonated across politics, commerce, and mass culture.
As we celebrate Dr. Collins’ achievements, we invite you to explore the ideas shaping our world via the Berggruen Institute's Substack, where you can dive deeper into philosophy, culture, social change, and the work of this year’s Prize Laureate.

Special thanks to the 2023 Prize Jury and to our Berggruen Institute team for their efforts to recognize Dr. Collins. We are inspired by her farsighted virtuosity.
