私は１０年以上、日本の共同制作者や仲間とともに「日本の女性」という作品に取り組んできました。このモノクロ写真のシリーズは、日本に住むさまざまな背景をもつ女性たちの美しさ、力強さがテーマです。写真はモデルになった方々が書いた文章、あるいはモデル以外の方が書いた文章とともに展示されます。それには日本人のアイデンティティについての議論をかたちづくるという意図もあるからです。私の仕事が、展覧会や出版物だけでなく、フェミニストと教育の場、双方の方々に、広くご覧いただければと願います。Laurie Toby Edison message for WAN readers:
I have been working on Women of Japan with collaborators and colleagues in Japan for over 10 years. My series of black and white fine art photographs is about the beauty and power of women from diverse backgrounds in Japan. The photographs are always exhibited with text by models and others. It is also intended to create discussions about Japanese identity. I am hoping for wide exposure of the work in both feminist and educational settings, as well as in exhibition and printed materials.

ローリー・トビ・エディソンさんは、国際舞台で活躍している肖像写真家です。
彼女の三部作ともいえる作品群は、「太った女性たちのヌード」、「様々なグループの男性たちのヌード」、「日本に住む女性たちの着衣の肖像」のシリーズです。

2001年、大阪国立国際美術館にて彼女の写真100点を展示した回顧展「Meditations on the Body: Recent Work」が開催されました。それから彼女の作品はニューヨーク、東京、京都、トロント、ボストン、ロンドン、サンフランシスコと世界中を巡回し、2007年秋、「Women of Japan」プロジェクトの完結編ともいえる展覧会がパシフィコ横浜コンベンションセンタ窶狽ﾅ開催されました。

Profile
Laurie Toby Edison is an internationally exhibited portrait photographer. Her three suites of photographs include a series of nudes of fat women, a series of nudes of a very diverse group of men, and a series of clothed portraits of women living in Japan. Edison’s work is black-and-white fine art, with an underlying social change message, which she often phrases as “making the invisible visible.”
In 1994 she published Women En Large: Images of Fat Nudes [http://laurietobyedison.com/WomenEnLarge.asp?lang=JP], a black-and-white fine art photography book (edited and text by Debbie Notkin).

Familiar Men: A Book of Nudes [http://laurietobyedison.com/FamiliarMen.asp?lang=JP], also fine art in black-and-white, was published in the fall of 2003 (edited by Debbie Notkin, text by Debbie Notkin and Richard F. Dutcher).

Her most recent project is Women of Japan [http://laurietobyedison.com/galleryWOJ.asp?lang=JP], (1998-2009) a suite of clothed portraits of women in Japan, who are from many cultures and backgrounds.
A retrospective of one hundred of her photographs “Meditations on the Body: Recent Work” was exhibited at the National Museum of Art in Osaka in 2001. Her photographs have also been exhibited around the world, including New York City, Tokyo, Kyoto, Toronto, Boston, London, and San Francisco. An exhibition of the complete Women of Japan project was shown at the Pacifico Convention Center in Yokohama in the fall of 2007.
