2018年秋のある夕方、わたしは心ときめかせながら、海の彼方にいるまったく面識のない上野千鶴子さんへとメールをしたためた。上野さんの著作約30冊の読後感を縷々綴り、そしてわたしが教鞭をとる大学（中国南京市の東南大学）での集中講義を請い願った。少々無謀なリクエストにもかかわらず、早くも翌日、上野さんから快諾のお返事をいただけたことが、今でも夢のようである。その集中講義が実現したのは翌2019年の9月のことである。最初のコンタクトから講演実現まで1年ほどかかったが、その1年間で上野さんの中国における知名度は一気に高まった。 そのきっかけは他でもない、日本でも話題となった2019年東京大学入学式で行われた祝辞である。もし、私から上野さんへの無謀なメールがちょっと遅れていたら、間違いなく他の大学に先を越されていたことだろう。 東大祝辞が中国のインターネット上で流布した後、「上野千鶴子」に興味を持った多くの人びとが彼女の著作を探し求めたが、まだ中国語の翻訳書が少なかったため、『女ぎらい』1冊だ
